Music seems to have become some kind of pretentious right of passage. There's music that you're supposed to like, you know if you like a specific genre there are albums that you're supposed to know and adore. And if you don't like it then you're not a true fan. But if someone doesn't like it then they call your music taste a piece of shit and shrug you off, since to them, you know absolutely nothing. You weren't taught right, the music that you listen to isn't real, it's fake, it bums off someone else and it's not original.
Why can't music just be there because it's art? Why does there always have to be this brouhaha about everything that a person likes. People are defined by what kind of music they listen to, it's one of the first conversation starters that someone whips out. They say oh yeah I like the kooks, listen to belle and sebastion a bit and some silversun pickups. Labeled as a dumbass indie kid. I listen to cobra starship, ke$ha, name some other band of that sort and then you're a lame hipster pop kid. It's all a load of shit. Music is music, shut up about it.
